This dissertation - attributed to an unidentified French clergyman active in Italy, and entirely unknown to scholarship - is one of the most elaborate contemporary French works on educational travel, combining Enlightenment values with the notion of the Grand Tour.
Des Acharts presents travel as equally essential to the development of both countries and individual men. He suggests that a man who does not travel has to rely on texts regarding other cultures, and presents this argument through the Valladolid debate of 1550 - taking the side of Bartolomeo de Las Casas in defense of native Americans. |
