Dalberg was governor of Erfurt and a respected scholar at the time of writing this traditional letter of advice. He advises concentrating on one form of travel, rather than trying to cover several domains superficially. Among the preliminary readings he recommends are Montesquieu, Mably and BĂĽsching. He also suggests concentrating on social and economic conditions, and arranging observations in alphabetical order, to allow them to be kept in a securely without drawing hasty conclusions. Section appears Vol. 9 (1782), pp. 385-414. The letter itself is dated 17 June 1782. |
