Originally a discours at the Academy of Béziers in 1762, Gros de Besplas' dissertation is more a praise of travel than a real apodemica, but it contains some ideas generally about travels as such. He uses the very traditional image of the "book of Nature", and the traveller browsing its pages. Its main focus is on the usefulness of travel literature. It does not contain many original ideas: the Baron Grimm in the Correspondance littéraire (September 1763) calls it "a rhapsody of common truths and trivial thoughts". One of the first apodemic texts to insist on the importance of travels made especially for the study of the "wild". |
