After the criticism of useless travels in his earlier work on pedagogy (Des Voyages, 1718), described elsewhere in this database, here Crousaz produces actual advice for travels. He is well aware of earlier apodemic texts (Lipsius, Bernegger, and Ranzovius). The priority is the education of princes through travels, but he also has some comments for other types of travellers - although he believes that only select people should travel. He recommends watchful behaviour, particularly avoiding getting into discussions on religious differences; possibly inspired by Montaigne, he praises openness and intellectual meetings. He suggests visiting great cities where one encounters many nations.
