Authorship Notes Burghley's letter preparing Manners for a tour of France directed the latter to observe military organisation and installations, geography, court culture, and antiquarian ruins which he was to compare to the writings of classical authors such as Caesar, Livy, etc. Manners later wrote to Cecil describing this tour (see ODNB).
