A systematic, thorough, and copious account of matters for observation in travel and geographical exploration in line with Jackson's interest in the reform of geography to a scientific and systematic basis (away from the model of adventurous amateur travel).
Jackson's system of heads of description proceeds under the following sections: geography, hydrography, meterology, geology (including mines and exploitation), farming, animal husbandry, inhabitants, habitations, industry, manufacturing, commerce, religious institutions, government, legislation, finance, letter post, sciences, literature, fine arts, history, military, foreign relations, colonies, and a considerations of instruments and operations to be used for these operations. All of these sections are pursued with considerable detail and followed by appendixes on the analysis of mineral water, collecting and preserving specimens, as well as tables designed for the recording of information on the above heads. These heads are only very slightly expanded from the French edition (the main difference being the methodological notes towards the end). |
