Authorship Notes The second of libertin author La Mothe le Vayer's essays on travels. As an intellectual exercise and demonstration of virtuosity he followed his essay in praise of travel ('De l'utilité des voyages') with an essay arguing the opposite. Written in the same style as the pro-travel essay - with numerous classical references - it describes travel as vain and dangerous, and suggests that any benefits one could derive from travel are largely outweighed by its moral and physical dangers. This essay occurs at pp. 76-86, and is immediately preceded by 'De l'utilité des voyages', described elsewhere in this database.
