Authorship Notes This text first appears as the translator's preface ('Préface du traducteur') to volume 4 of Bernard's collection of travels (1718). In editions after 1731 the title changes to 'Dissertation pour voyager utilement'. While the other texts appended by Bernard to this collection contain mostly scientific instructions, being adaptations of Boyle's 'General Heads' (1692), this essay concentrates on the questions of how to write useful travel accounts, and avoid errors from earlier accounts. Bernard also gives advice on how to behave while traveling, and some practical instructions on topics such as religion and health. This section occurs pp. I-LXII of vol. IV (1718)
