First of two apodemic texts featuring at the start of Baudelot de Dairval's extensive essay on travel and antiquarianism. It is mostly a dedicatory preface, highlighting the importance of travel as lived experience: it is through experience that one can aim for perfection. Through the example of a visit to England (presented here as an rare and usually less appreciated destination), it suggests that every country one visits, even the most infertile one, is interesting for the traveller: one studies its climate, the customs of its inhabitants, and its curiosities, to enrich one's memory and understanding. |
