The anonymous dissertation no. 6. of the Lyon contest was criticised by the reviewer for its pompous language and lack of real ideas. The author was well aware of the fact that the jury appreciates style as much as content - but, in this case, behind the style there was very little content.
The first section of the dissertation is meant to be the foundation of what follows: it presents a summary of the author's ideas on the nature of Man.
The dissertation on travelling opens with a list of praiseworthy travellers from the past and from the present. It suggests some destinations and the lessons one could learn there during a visit. The young man's travel should be performed accompanied by a tutor - but the instructions never become a coherent system that would reach beyond commonplace ideas. |
