This treatise against Danish monarchy was 'composed in spirit of revenge' following Molesworth's recall from his embassy to Denmark. The ODNB remarks this work was first published anonymously in 1693 and followed by four editions in two years, however, it has not been possible to confirm this. What is certain is that this work appeared anonymously with no printer or publisher in 1694. It also appeared 'printed for Timothy Goodwin' and advertising itself as 'the Third Edition corrected' in the same year. A French edition titled 'Etat present de Danemarc par lequel on voit le fort, & le foible de cette couronne, avec des remarques tres utiles, sur son gouvernement despotique' was also printed by Thomas Fuller in London in 1694. Given the controversy surrounding this work and its initial anonymous authorship these attributions should perhaps be treated with caution. Responses to this work were numerous, including 'Denmark vindicated: being an answer to a late treatise called, An account of Denmark, as it was in the year 1692' (1694); 'Animadversions on a pretended Account of Danmark' (1694); and 'The common-wealths-man unmasqu’d: or a just rebuke to the author of the account of Denmark' (1694). |
