David Stevenson's entry in the ODNB argues convincingly that 'Instructions to a Son ...' is not in fact by Campbell but rather 'is spurious, a conventional tract of advice to children crudely edited to make it appear to be by Argyll'. Chapter V deals with travel (pp. 69-78). The text is a highly conventional praise of the utility of travels and contains some basic advice. In common the rest of the volume in which it appears 'Of Travel' has very little original content.
