Chapter XVIII of Bacon's Essayes, "Of Travaile", is a short and concise summary of the apodemic tradition. It insists on the importance of keeping a diary, speaking the language of the country where one travels, and having read source material on the country visited. A long list of things worth observing is provided. He goes against travelling traditions of his time by suggesting only short stays in any one place and avoiding the company of fellow countrymen. Following the apodemic tradition contact with local scholars is presented as a vital source of knowledge, and a means of shortening the time required visiting any one place. He also adds some advice on behavior during travels. |
