This work is anonymous, the [1766?] title page lists the author as 'an officer in the Royal-Navy'. A contemporary review in 'The Monthly Review' (1766, Volume 35) treats the author as anonymous. Philip Playstowe has been suggested as a possible author: see Factotum: newsletter of the XVIIIth century STC, British Library, Oct. 1984, pp.12-13. Later editions often attributed to John Milard, though the basis for this attribution is uncertain. In the 1787 edition Kearsley thanks the author of another of his titles, 'The Gentleman's Guide through Italy', for 'considerable additions and improvements' (both Thomas Martyn and this work are described elsewhere in this database). The Apodemic introduction of 'The Gentleman's Guide in his Tour through France' occurs at pages 1-13 of the 1770 edition. |
