Greville advises his cousin to learn the 'language, habilities, disposition and humours of the people'. He also advocates using books of cosmography to gain knowledge of the country and suggests that Varney records what he learns in writing. Greville further advises his cousin to be neither too prejudicial nor too easily influenced by what he encounters, and warns that few travellers return more religious than when they set out. The letter occurs pp. 295-98. The letter is dated 20 November 1609. |
