Dedicated to Prince Charles. 'Instructions for travelling in France, Spain and Italy' combines elements of the Apodemic tradition with Howell's own experiences and observations on travel, its practicalities, and various countries. It begins with a description of the benefits of travel and useful skills a traveller requires, and continues with a list of books to be read, and a caveat that the traveller should be well grounded in his religion. Howell also advocates keeping a travel journal. The work continues with notes on the languages, states of the countries, and advice for travels in France, Spain, Italy, Germany, and Holland. It ends with miscellaneous heads on subjects such as 'of the abuse of forrain travel' and 'a discourse of the vulgar languages of Europe'. |
