Muralt's 'Lettre sur les voiages' warns against the possible corrupting effects travel. It closes the 1725 edition of his 'Lettres sur les Anglois et les François' (pp. 457-543).
Muralt - himself a former traveller, but converted to Pietism in the meantime - systematically dismisses all possible benefits of travel. It leads to dangers or moral corruption and loss of natural character - topics known from authors such as Joseph Hall. The only possible benefit of the travel is the rest that comes afterwards. |
