The greatest part of this little handbook is practical advice: it covers footware, medical preparation, suggestions to feed convalescent travellers. It is the section 'Moyens de rendre le voyage utile et amusant' (pp. 30-36) that is properly apodemic.
His advice is primarily directed at those who are travelling not for curiosity (such travellers would know how to proceed), but by necessity: the advice is to make such travel experiences useful and entertaining. His suggestion is to observe everything that is worthy of curiosity, which will keep boredom at bay, and provide consolation for the physical difficulties of travel.
The list of things to observe cover more or less anything, from terrain and soil through physical built of inhabitants, their customs and religions; the physical landscape; libraries and manufactures, typical local culinary products, battlefields and tombs. It is important to write down what one observes, or discuss it with travel companions. |
