The 'Traveller's Useful Vade Mecum' is a journal recording the minutiae of Poole's journeys through France and the Netherlands. It also contains a French grammar, practical travel advice, and a voluminous gazetteer of assorted European geography. The apodemic content is limited to the dedication to the reader which takes the form of a sermon on the spiritual benefits of travel figuring life as a journey and peppered with scriptural references. It occurs vol. 1 pp. i-v in the 1744 edition. |
