Authorship Notes 'The Gentleman's Guide in his Tour Through Italy' is largely a practical guide book describing routes and itineraries through Italy and giving practical travel advice. However, Martyn's account of his own method for writing this guide - given in the preface (pp. i-vii)- is close to being apodemic in content. Martyn first extracted descriptions from his journal, then perused the works of previously esteemed authors (including George Sandys and Richard Lasselss), and finally compared these with the advice of friends, especially those who had experience of Italian travel. From these sources he considers himself to have produced a 'tolerably correct' guide.
