Genlis's 'Le voyageur' is a largely practical work: it contains a large variety of topics such as itineraries, communication, hygiene, and recipes easy to prepare on the road. However the preface, 'Conseils aux fugitifs et aux voyageurs, qui veulent entreprendre de longs voyages et qui nâont Ă cet Ă©gard aucune expĂ©rience' (pp. XIII-XLII), also covers apodemic topics such as utility of travels. Daniel Roche, 'Humeurs vagabondes. De la circulation des hommes et de l'utilitĂ© des voyages' (Paris, 2003), pp. 168-169, describes 'Le voyageur' as a rare example where apodemic ambition meets practical usage, in a handbook of 'ambulant house-keeping'. |
