The reviewer of the Lyon contest, count Laurencin, discarded this dissertation in absolute despair at having to read such poor works. It is indeed a collection of clichés, written in a pompous style which might be attempting to impress, but falls flat.
The dissertation declares travel to be useful, when performed correctly, and recommends a Mentor to accompany the youngster. Someone who has travelled is much better prepared to face any situation than those who remained in their homes; travelling also benefits the body.
The only original feature of the text is offering, in the second half, advice and an examplar for the description of a non-specified country (a city and the surrounding countryside) - a practice that was widespread in 16th-century apodemic texts, but less usual in the 18th. |
